Last week at the camp we hosted Cédric Cossais, his son Adonis, and their good friend François, traveled over from France for their very first trip to the Lofoten. They arrived with a dream , and they left with a Grand Slam and one fish none of us will forget in a hurry.
The week was all about coalfish. Big ones, and best of all, plenty of them taken on topwater. If you have never watched a proper coalfish smash a lure on the surface, put it on your list. It is violent, it is visual, and it turns grown men into kids again. Between the coalfish sessions the cod kept coming too, one after another, session after session.
What struck them most was the sheer amount of life out here. That is the thing that gets first-time visitors every time. It is not one good spot with a few fish. It is biomass, everywhere you look.
Cod, coalfish and halibut, all three in the same week. That is the Røst Grand Slam, and to pull it off on a first ever trip to the Lofoten is something to be proud of. Plenty of anglers come to chase that combination.
And then the fish everyone is still talking about. Cédric landed a coalfish of 17.5 kilos, taken on light gear (20 lbs test line). Anyone who has felt a big coalfish dig for the bottom knows what that fight must have been like, and on light tackle it is a serious piece of angling. One of the most impressive coalfish activity we have seen at the camp this year.
Beyond the numbers, this is what these weeks are really about. A father, his son, and a good friend who came a long way north together, sharing the love of fishing and a week they will talk about for years. That is the part we love most.
