Prepare Your Next Adventure. Get the most out of your trip to Røst Fishing Camp.
After numerous fishing trips to Norway, it’s soon my 5th season as camp manager. One thing has become clear: most anglers bring way too much tackle. You need to prepare for Your Next Adventure for Røst Fishing. Unlike fishing in France, the chances of losing gear in Norway are surprisingly low. I’ll admit, It took me some time to realize it, and I’m still, overpacking “just in case”. I don’t count the gear that never even touched the water.
With airline weight limits in mind, it’s far more efficient and practical. To prepare Your Next Adventure, pack only what you truly need. Honestly, I could head to Norway with just 2 or 3 shads, one dead bait rig, and a Norwegian pilk. Still, I will have everything I require for a successful trip.
To help you avoid overpacking, I’ve outlined the core tackle I recommend that you take with you to Norway. Hopefully, this guide will simplify your preparation and ensure you bring the right tools for the job.
When it comes to fish in Lofoten, lures are an essential part to prepare your next adventure. With countless options available on the market, choosing the right one can be a challenge. However, after years of fishing, I’ve found a few key lures selection that delivers year after year.
To prepare for Your Next Adventure, here are my go-to shads for for Cod, Coalfish, and Halibut at this time of year. They come in a variety of weights, allowing for versatility in different conditions. Most shads come with a single large hook. To increase hook-ups, I sometimes add a stinger hook, like the SAVAGE GEAR BIG FISH STINGER . Avoid using extra trebble they increase the risk of hooking yourself.
When it comes to lures for Norway, it’s all about having the right tools for the job. Whether you’re targeting cod, coalfish, or halibut, the right shad, pilk, or chrome lure can make all the difference. My personal favorites include the Dexter Shad 250, monster shads 200 , and slow jigs or pilk. All proven winners for Norway’s rich waters.
Another effective method is fishing just below the surface, casting your lures away and retrieving them quickly. I recommend selecting “prop bait” type lures or hybrid lures like the SHIMANO OCEA BUBBLE DIP 180F or even better the HALCO SKIMSTICK 185MM. This one is already equipped with heavy duty single hooks. I highly recommend that to fish coalfish on top water you only use single hook. It’s safer for your fingers. Get a taste of the the topa water frenzy by reading last year report : FISHING COALFISH ON TOP WATER!
One key observation I’ve made over the year, halibuts don’t always just grab the shad in one big strike. The bite can be gradual, with the fish grabbing and letting go before it fully commits. I always advise teasing the fish by slowly reeling in, then gently dropping the lure back to encourage a bite.
With these lures and techniques in your arsenal, you’ll be set for a productive and memorable fishing adventure in Norway!
Choosing the Right Rod Setup for Your Next Adventure in Norway means getting ready for powerful species. To cover all techniques, 2 to 3 rods per fisherman is reasonable. One rod 30 to 50 lbs to fish ”Traction” and topwater. One 50 lbs jigging rod, one up to 80 lbs heavy rod for vertical fishing with up to 300gr lures. Selecting the right rod setup is key. I recommend to search for travel rods that can save you the hustle. Some rods in the recommendation are not in the cheapest range. As much as you can afford, you should take into consideration that a broken rod or a poor equipment can ruin your experience.
For traction techniques and explosive topwater action, you’ll want a rod with precision and flexibility. The Hearty Rise Skywalker Norway Spinning 764S/150 is a standout. Designed specifically for Norwegian fishing, it’s compact, travel-ready, and ideal for aggressive coalfish or shallower cod sessions. Its 30–50 lb rating strikes the perfect balance between power and playability.
If you’re packing just one rod, make it a PE2–4 jigging rod. This setup shines during baitfish feeding frenzies, where coalfish and cod school up aggressively. Pair it with a 3000–5000 size spinning reel and braided line (PE2.5–3). It’s light enough to work shads and lures with finesse, but tough enough to handle the unexpected brute.
When jigging deep for cod or coalfish, control and strength matter. The Savage Gear FURY SG6 Boat Travel Casting Rod is purpose-built for this. Rated to 50 lb, it delivers backbone and sensitivity, making it a reliable tool for vertical jigging with precision.
Fishing vertically with heavy lures for halibut demands serious muscle. Choose a heavy-duty rod rated up to 80 lb, capable of handling lures up to 300–400g. The Westin W6 Boat Rod is a powerhouse built for this job. It’s perfect when you’re targeting monster halibut in strong currents of Rost waters.
The mainline is one of the Foundation of Your Fishing Setup. The most crucial pieces of gear, as it’s the direct connection between you and the fish. Quality is non-negotiable. While I’ve come across articles talking about cheap 500-meter spools of braid from Asia for as little as €4,00. I remain highly skeptical about the quality of such products. For braid, durability, sensitivity are key to ensure that you wil not lose the catch of your life.
I prefer my braid to have a darker color and be fairly thin. It minimizes the drag it creates when fishing at depth, which is especially important in Norway’s deep waters. My go-to brand is Berkley Spiderwire Stealth 270m Green—it’s been my trusted choice for years, never letting me down. I typically use 60lb breaking strain, which is ideal for most of Norway’s fishing conditions. Known for its smoothness and strength, Berkley Braid is an excellent choice. Its color options and sensitivity make it perfect for your need in Norway’s waters.
Weather in the Lofoten region can change fast, so smart layering is essential:
