Some weeks giants halibuts just decide to show up, and this is one of them. We are right in the middle of a serious halibut run at Røst, and the two days we have just had are hard to top. Two halibut of two metres +, on back-to-back days, by two different groups. That is not something you see often anywhere in the world.

Two metres, two days

The first giant came in at 202 cm, a proper old fish of around 121 kilos. The very next day, a second group answered with another two-metre halibut at 200 cm, weighing in around 119 kilos. Two of these behemoths within twenty-four hours of each other. We are still shaking our heads about it.

A 16-year-old and a two-metre + giant
Here is the part that makes this one special. The second fish, that full two-metre halibut at 200 cm, was landed by Oscar , just 16 years old. Imagine that. Most anglers fish a lifetime and never touch a two-metre fish, and Oscar did it before he can even drive a car. But he sure can set the hook! He kept his head, did everything right, and beat a fish far heavier than himself. Hats off, Oscar and the team. That is a catch he will carry with him forever.

Father and son, twice over
What ties the two days together is lovely: both groups were a father and son. Two families, two boats, two giants, and in each case a dad and his boy sharing the moment of a lifetime. That is what Røst is really about. The fish are the reason people come, but the memories made in the boat are what they take home.

And plenty more halibut
And it is not just the two big ones. The whole week has been full of nice fish, with plenty of smaller fish coming up for our guests every day. When the activity is on like this, everyone in the boat gets their shot. But two at the two-metre mark in two days is the headline, and rightly so.

Every one of these giants was measured, admired for a moment, and released strong to swim back down. Catch and release for our biggest halibut, always. That is how these old fish stay in Røst waters for the next angler to dream about.

Hats off to both anglers, and to two families who will be telling these stories for years.

Tight lines, and see you soon at Røst Fishing Camp.
